Diabetic Eye Evaluations in Riverview & Gibsonton, FL

Diabetes is a leading cause of preventable vision loss in adults — but when detected early, diabetic eye disease is highly treatable. At Riverview Eye Care, we provide comprehensive diabetic eye evaluations designed to monitor and protect your vision at every stage of your diabetes management. Using advanced retinal imaging technology, our doctors assess your eyes for the earliest signs of diabetic damage before symptoms affect your vision.

Why Diabetic Eye Exams Are Essential

Elevated blood sugar levels can damage the small blood vessels that supply the retina — the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye — causing a condition called diabetic retinopathy. In its early stages, diabetic retinopathy produces no noticeable symptoms. By the time vision changes become apparent, significant and potentially irreversible damage may have already occurred. Annual eye exams are the most reliable way to catch these changes early, when intervention is most effective.

In addition to diabetic retinopathy, people with diabetes are at elevated risk for diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma — all of which our team screens for during each evaluation.

What We Assess During Your Diabetic Eye Evaluation

Your diabetic eye evaluation at Riverview Eye Care includes a full dilated examination and, where appropriate, digital retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT). These tools allow us to capture high-resolution images of the retina and macula, detect micro-aneurysms and hemorrhages, identify areas of swelling (edema), and monitor changes over time.

We provide thorough documentation for co-management with your primary care physician or endocrinologist. If you are currently taking a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic®, Wegovy®, or Mounjaro®, we also recommend our specialized GLP-1 eye evaluation, as rapid glucose changes associated with these medications can temporarily affect your vision and retinal health.

For patients with elevated intraocular pressure, we integrate glaucoma screening into each visit as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Diabetic Eye Evaluations

How often should a person with diabetes have an eye exam?

Most medical guidelines recommend a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once per year for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Patients with existing retinopathy or other complications may need evaluations every 3 to 6 months. Your doctor at Riverview Eye Care will recommend the appropriate schedule based on your individual findings.

What conditions do diabetic eye evaluations screen for?

Our evaluations screen for diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, glaucoma, and other changes in the optic nerve and retinal vasculature associated with diabetes. Early detection of any of these conditions significantly improves treatment outcomes.

Will my pupils be dilated during the exam?

Yes, dilation is a standard and essential part of a comprehensive diabetic eye evaluation. Eye drops are used to temporarily enlarge the pupil, allowing your doctor to examine the full extent of the retina. Your vision may be slightly blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours afterward, so we recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging a driver if possible.

Can diabetic eye disease be treated?

Yes. When detected early, diabetic retinopathy and macular edema can be managed with laser therapy, intravitreal injections, or other interventions that significantly reduce the risk of vision loss. Treatment is most effective when changes are caught before they progress — which is why consistent annual exams are so important.

I have Type 2 diabetes but my vision seems fine. Do I still need an eye exam?

Absolutely. Diabetic retinopathy often produces no symptoms in its early stages. Many patients are unaware of retinal changes until significant damage has occurred. Even with excellent blood sugar control, annual eye exams are recommended for all patients with diabetes.

Do I need a referral to schedule a diabetic eye evaluation at Riverview Eye Care?

No referral is required. Simply call (813) 498-1905 or request an appointment online. We are happy to coordinate with your primary care physician or endocrinologist and provide documentation of your examination findings.

Does Riverview Eye Care offer retinal imaging as part of the diabetic exam?

Yes. We use digital retinal imaging and OCT to capture detailed images of the back of your eye. These images allow us to monitor your retinal health over time and detect even subtle changes between visits.
